Imago / Visual Contagions
The Imago Center, established and led by Prof. Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel (University of Geneva, Switzerland; formerly Ecole normale supérieure, Paris), is a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence that received funding from Europe between 2019 and 2021. The center focused on the European circulation of images. It has been co-directed at ENS by Dr. Léa Saint-Raymond as part of a postdoctoral role.
The aim of the « IMAGO » Centre of Excellence was to understand how European cultures have met through the international circulation of images.
The center hosted a collaboration between historians, art historians, cognitivists, computer vision specialists and contemporary artists.
We studied, teached, and exhibited to broader publics to what extent images have been the crucible of European cultural homogenization, or reveal particular cultural and political differences.
The activities of the Imago Center are now being continued and expanded on a global scale through the Digital Humanities Chair at the University of Geneva, particularly with the Visual Contagions project and its digital platform Explore.
